History

Since 1921, mechanized farming had been started with mouldboard plough, seeder, transplanting mechanism and water pump, etc. and HANOMAG tractors and INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER (T.D-9) crawler tractors were utilized to test plowing in rice fields. Under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, the Board for Tractor and Machinery Installation was formed in 1949 and mechanized farming works were being implemented. In 1951, the Agricultural Engineering Branch was formed in place of the board and agricultural mechanized services was offered with crawler tractors. Before the Union Revolutionary Council in 1962, 16 types of tractors (429 tractors and 85 crawler tractors) had been purchased.

During the term of the Union Revolutionary Council in 1962, Agricultural Mechanization Project was implemented under the Agriculture and Rural Development Corporation. Under this initiative, 1,000 tractors were allocated to 38 tractor stations under the Agriculture and Rural Development Corporation. Additionally, another 1,000 tractors were distributed to 20 tractor stations under the Federation of Wholesale Cooperatives.

According to the Revolutionary Council's Declaration No. 97 on March 16, 1972, the Agricultural Mechanization Project was separated from the Agriculture and Rural Development Corporation and was organized as the Agricultural Mechanization Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.

As of September 2023, the Director General leads the department and 402 officers including 2 Deputy Director Generals and 19 Directors and 4799 other staff have been employed although it has an establishment of 501 officers and 11391 other staff according to the organization chart.
